3:33⅓ - Herbie Hancock - You Bet Your Love

Herbie Hancock brought some disco into the mix in 1979 and frankly he was edging towards the disco side of things for years. I am tired of the disco slander. And I had an amazing conversation many years ago with the amazing writer Craig Werner (read his book A Change Is Gonna Come Music, Race & the Soul of America). He was doing the usual shorthand of saying “disco sucks” in one of his classes at UW-Madison and a student brought him aside and pointed out the racist and homophobic overtones of this knee jerk hate of disco. Disco was funky, it queered gender norms at a time where that behavior was much more niche. Just something to think about, when you say you hate disco. . .why? It might be repetitive but you might not being doing the right things to the music? If I’m dancing I’m want some repetition to it. I think with someone like Herbie he was happy to get lost in a groove, but he wasn’t going to sit on one chord for ten minutes. Make it two chords and and it’s Chameleon! JAZZ JOKE. Anywho, this record is funky, it’s pretty good. And disco is undefeated for awesome breakdowns. What a treat.
